This comprehensive program prepares individuals to achieve competency in the skills and theoretical knowledge necessary to enter the Pharmacy environment as a Pharmacy Technician. Emphasizing a customer-centered approach, this program also helps develop the proper attitude and sense of responsibility necessary for success in the progressive field of Pharmacy.


Career Opportunities


This program will prepare the graduate to work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist in hospitals, community pharmacies, and other related pharmaceutical fields. Typical duties of a Pharmacy Technician include preparing medication for dispensing; compounding pharmaceuticals; preparing aseptic products; inventory control; purchasing; merchandising; record keeping as required under such acts as the Food and Drug Act; narcotics control; third-party billing; drug distribution; pre-packing pharmaceuticals; computer processing; and clerical and other duties as necessary.


Certification


Graduates of this program will be eligible to apply to sit the certification examination offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board of Alberta (P.T.C.B.-A.B.) and to register with the Canadian Association of Pharmacy Technicians – Alberta (C.A.P.T. – A.B.).


Prerequisites

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent (transcript required) with a passing mark in Biology 30, Science 30, Math 30 or 33, and English 30 or 33.
  • Passing score on the CDI entrance examination.
  • Pre-Entrance Immunization Report indicating a student is fit to undertake the program/practicum and has up-to-date immunization. In addition to regular immunization, it is mandatory that each student start the immunization process against Hepatitis B within the first month of starting the program. Students may also be required to be immunized against influenza virus, dependent on field placement requirements.
  • Police check indicating the absence of a criminal record.
  • A minimum keyboarding speed of 30 words per minute prior to starting the practicum component.


Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate and receive a diploma, a student must obtain an overall average of at least 70% in the Pharmacy Technician program and a minimum grade of 70% in each of the final exams (theory and practical).
A student must complete the hours of the Student Success Strategies and Career and Employment Strategies courses, as well as the hours of the Practicum for the program as indicated on this outline.
Upon completion of the program, the student must have a minimum keyboarding speed of 35 words per minute.
